DOE Advances Nuclear Reactor Restart with Fourth Loan Disbursement

The agency issued $100 million to support Palisades Nuclear Plant Revival.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) disbursed over $100 million to Holtec International last month as part of a federal loan guarantee supporting the restart of the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Michigan. This is the fourth installment of a broader $1.52 billion loan agreement announced in 2024 and is a significant step toward restarting a commercial nuclear reactor that had previously ceased operations. The project is subject to continued regulatory approvals by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), which recently issued a final environmental assessment finding no significant environmental impact.

“The Department of Energy is taking a leading role in unleashing the American nuclear renaissance,” said Secretary Chris Wright. “The Palisades Nuclear Plant will help to reinvigorate our nuclear industrial base and will reestablish the United States as the world’s nuclear energy leader.”

The restart of the Palisades facility aligns with Executive Order 14302 which seeks to revive the U.S. nuclear industrial base and expand nuclear energy capacity. To date, Holtec has received over $251 million from the DOE’s Loan Programs Office to support the plant’s reopening and reintegration into the U.S. energy grid.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Secretary Wright as he manages the Department of Energy.
  • For U.S. energy officials as they facilitate the development of nuclear power.
