The nation’s largest property management company auto-charged early termination fees to military personnel who ended leases due to change of station orders.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Greystar Management Services LLC has agreed to pay more than $1.4 million to settle claims it violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). The company allegedly used software that automatically charged early lease termination fees to military personnel who ended their leases due to active-duty relocation orders, despite legal protections against such penalties.
The company, which manages over 800,000 units nationwide, will pay $1.35 million in compensation for affected servicemembers and co-tenants and a $77,370 civil penalty, and implement policy reforms including SCRA-compliant software and staff training.
“We honor the service and sacrifices of our military by defending their rights under the law,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “We are aggressively enforcing all laws, including the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, to protect our military servicemembers and veterans.”
This enforcement action was led by the Civil Rights Division’s Housing and Civil Enforcement Section in coordination with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices.
