I believe; help my unbelief. – Mark 9:24
Russell Kelso Carter was a man with a wide range of passions and abilities. An outstanding athlete as a youth, he found faith in Christ and became a minister. He began teaching at the Pennsylvania Military Academy, including as professor of chemistry, natural science, civil engineering, and mathematics. He also published books in his different disciplines and wrote several novels. While a professor, he began having problems with his heart. He went to California to spend three years as a sheep rancher to try to strengthen his health, but shortly he was in a state of collapse. He called on a minister from Boston and they decided to try healing through faith. They prayed and he was restored.
Later, he sought a greater presence of God. Things were going well for him until he became sick once again, convinced that he had to hunt for more power in prayer. Suffering from “consumption,” he again returned to California, where he studied medicine, ultimately returning to Baltimore as a physician. Along the way, he wrote the lyrics to “Standing on the Promises,” an old hymn loved by many. One of the song’s very autobiographical verses says, “Standing on the promises that cannot fail, when the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, by the living Word of God I shall prevail, standing on the promises of God.”
Each of God’s people has doubts from time to time. Though you may occasionally wonder whether the Lord cares for you or listens to your prayers, God is with you and He hears. Belief in His loving power helps you overcome any doubt or fear you have. Draw close to Him and stand on His promises. He is faithful to keep them. As you magnify the Lord, your troubles will shrink before His majesty. Intercede for members of Congress to find hope and courage through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
