Admits to lying about contents and purpose of packages during inspection
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) discovered evidence this week that a third Chinese national was smuggling biological material from China to the United States to have it researched by conspirators at the University of Michigan.
Chengxuan Han, a doctoral student at the College of Life Science and Technology at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, was stopped by Customs and Border Protection officials on June 8. During interviews with the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigation, she acknowledged that she initially lied to the CBP about the packages which contained “biological material related to round worms.“
“The alleged smuggling of biological materials by this alien from a science and technology university in Wuhan, China — to be used at a University of Michigan laboratory — is part of an alarming pattern that threatens our security,” said U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon. “The American taxpayer should not be underwriting a PRC-based smuggling operation at one of our crucial public institutions.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For DOJ attorneys as they prosecute foreign alien smugglers of biological materials that could potentially be used in agro-terrorism.
- For FBI, ICE, and CBP agents as they work to stop the trafficking of illicit or harmful substances and products into the U.S.
