USDA Recalls 15,000 Pounds of Beef Jerky Products

The agency says products did not disclose the inclusion of anchovies in allergen information.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recalled over 15,000 pounds of jerky produced by Utah-based company Springville Meat & Cold Storage Co. for failing to disclose a fish allergen warning on its packaging.

“The problem was discovered during production observations by [Food Safety and Inspection Service] inspectors, revealing that the Worcestershire sauce used in jerky and snack stick products contained anchovies,” the USDA explained. “The establishment previously used Worcestershire sauce without anchovies, but it was discovered that the new Worcestershire sauce does contain anchovies.”

Fish allergies can be potentially life-threatening, and food producers are required to disclose ingredient-based allergens on their packaging. There have been no reports of exposure to these products, but the USDA has listed the labels and lot numbers being recalled on its website.
