Flood and tornado warnings were issued in multiple states.
Thunderstorms brought flash flooding, hail, gusty winds, and the risk of tornadoes across Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa on Tuesday. In some areas, record rainfall has claimed lives in Wichita, Kansas. Tornado warnings were issued in parts of Oklahoma and Texas. A tornado touched down near Independence, Missouri. One Texas driver was drowned when his vehicle submerged on a flooded interstate in Dallas.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning to parts of Kansas. The Wichita and Kansas City areas experienced heavy rainfall on Tuesday, with emergency personnel using boats to rescue at least 70 motorists. In some areas, the flood waters reportedly rose several feet in a matter of hours, flooding homes and cars. Thousands lost power during the storms.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued an emergency disaster declaration “due to heavy rainfall impacting portions of the state with the potential of flooding and flash flooding.”
The severe weather diverted the flight of the Indiana Pacers to land in Tulsa instead of OKC ahead of the NBA finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Heavy rain with risks of flooding has been forecast for parts of New Mexico on Wednesday.
