FDA Launches Chemical Review System to Ensure Food Safety

The agency will use a systematic evaluation of ingredients currently in the food supply.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a new, proactive approach to reviewing food chemicals currently in the marketplace. The goal is to improve transparency and consumer trust through a systematic post-market review framework that prioritizes certain substances based on evidence and public concern. Chemicals such as BHT, BHA, ADA, phthalates, propylparaben, and titanium dioxide are among those the agency plans to review more aggressively.

“No parent should ever worry about what’s in their child’s food,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “We’re taking decisive action and using every authority we have to clean up the food supply and protect American families.”

“We are prioritizing our resources and leveraging gold standard science to create, for the first time, a systematic post-market review program that consumers can trust and rely on,” said FDA Commissioner Makary.

This initiative includes publishing an updated list of chemicals under review, opening public comment periods on review priorities, and accelerating evaluations of high-priority substances. The agency is also building on recent efforts to phase out synthetic petroleum-based dyes and reconsider the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) self-affirmation process.
