The pact will develop technologies “to stay ahead of emerging threats.”
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding this week with the Tawazun Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), promising to jointly research defense technologies. Within the document’s text, the two countries promise to use “non-traditional practices” to develop a “strong international community” and access “cutting-edge technologies.”
“We are building a global network by fostering collaboration to stay ahead of emerging threats,” said Defense Innovation Unit Director Doug Beck. “We are accelerating the integration of commercial technologies into the defense markets.”
The Defense Department stated the agreement “is enhancing best practices for harnessing and sharing the best commercially derived technologies for the warfighter in defense of the free and open international system through mission-driven collaboration among the many nations that rely on that system.”
President Donald Trump announced $200 billion in commercial agreements during his trip to the United Arab Emirates last week. These agreements include an artificial intelligence alliance and an investment in domestic aluminum production.
