NTSB Investigating the Crash of Mexican Navy Ship into Brooklyn Bridge

The focus is on the tug boats and the ship’s sudden acceleration.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash of the Mexican Navy tall ship into New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday. Officials are focusing on the tugboats that were guiding the ship and the sudden acceleration of the boat before its collision.

“We do have a bit of time where it was maintaining a constant speed of about 2 to 2.3 knots, and the speed began to increase,” said investigator-in-charge Brian Young. “That’s something we will be looking into as part of our engineering assessment.”

NTSB investigators have yet to receive the tall ship’s data from the Mexican government, but are confident the information will fill important gaps within their research.

“We are optimistic we will have that access very soon,” said NTSB board member Michael Graham. “This is a start of a long process. We will not be drawing any conclusions. We will not speculate.”

The ship’s masts were roughly 30 feet higher than the bottom of the bridge, and the rigging was filled with lights and naval cadets when the collision occurred. The three masts snapped after striking the bridge. Several of the cadets were injured and two were killed in the crash.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For NTSB investigators as they seek access to the Mexican ship to glean information on the crash.
  • For Chair Jennifer Homendy to be led by the Lord as she heads the NTSB.
  • For healing for the Mexican naval cadets who were injured in the collision.
  • For God’s comfort for the families of those who perished in the crash.
