Budget advances after the second vote held following renegotiations.
The House Budget Committee finally approved President Donald Trump’s long-awaited “big, beautiful bill” on Sunday. Four of the majority members voted “present” – which allowed the bill to proceed – while the minority were unanimously opposed.
This was the committee’s second vote to approve the legislation for a full vote on the House floor. The committee failed to pass the bill in its first vote held Thursday when the representatives who voted “present” on Sunday voted against the measure. This led to renegotiations over the weekend regarding Medicaid work requirements in addition to continued pressure from the president to pass the bill quickly.
President Trump called the holdouts “grandstanders,” stating, “STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!”
House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday, “The concern is… the ability of the states to retool their [Medicaid] systems and ensure the verification processes, to make sure that all the new laws and all the new safeguards that we’re placing can actually be enforced. We’re working through all those details, and we’ll get it done.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Speaker Johnson as he shepherds the massive funding bill through the lower chamber.
- For President Trump and members of his administration as they work to implement his agenda while they wait for Congressional support.
