FDA Approves Three Food Colors from Natural Sources

Three companies submitted two blue colors and a white.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three new naturally derived colors for use in American food products. Three separate companies submitted the new colors for approval; a blue color derived from the red algae species galdieria sulphuraria, a blue tone extracted from butterfly pea flower, and a white color achieved using finely ground calcium phosphate.

“On April 22, I said the FDA would soon approve several new color additives and would accelerate our review of others. I’m pleased to report that promises made, have been promises kept,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary.

Commissioner Makary added, “FDA staff have been moving quickly to expedite the publication of these decisions, underscoring our serious intent to transition away from petroleum-based dyes in the food supply and provide new colors from natural sources.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Commissioner Makary to be discerning as he heads the Food and Drug Administration.
  • For wisdom for Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as he manages the Department of Health and Human Services.
