President Congratulates First American Pope After His Election

Pope Leo XIV is originally from Chicago, Illinois.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church on Thursday by the cardinal conclave. There were at least four ballots before he received the necessary two-thirds required. He previously held the position of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican. The Chicago native chose the name Leo XIV.

President Donald Trump stated, “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

The new pope spoke in Italian from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, saying, “We have to be a church that works together to build bridges and to keep our arms open, like this very piazza, welcoming.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For God to be at work through the new pope as Pope Leo XIV will often be the first face of Christianity that many see in the world.
  • For Pope Leo XIV to be a faithful representative of Christ and of the Catholic Church.
  • For God’s guidance for President Trump as he interacts with leaders and heads of state.
