Today, the Transportation Security Administration implements the Real ID requirements for travel that have been delayed for years. The agency warned that passengers without passports or compliant ID “can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint.”

REAL ID updates were mandated by federal law in 2005, which was meant to improve standards for traveler identification in the wake of 9/11. The implementation has experienced multiple delays. Today’s deadline for launch is the result of a three-year extension made in 2022.
“The reason that Real ID is being enforced is because it’s a federal law,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said. “It will just allow people to get an ID that they should be on our planes. They should be people that [have] United States residencies. And legal status will be checked.“
