Marine Corps Deploying First Unmanned Supply Vessel in Okinawa

Semisubmersible watercraft designed to move weapons across long distances.

The Marine Corps will launch its Autonomous Low-Profile Vessel, a newly developed unmanned supply vessel, in waters around Okinawa, Japan, spokesperson Captain Pawel Puczko said. He stated that the semi-submersible vessel, inspired by narco-boats and oil rig support ships, is part of “an ongoing modernization process.” They will allow supplies and weapons to be more covertly transported to military operations in contested areas within the Indo-Pacific region. The vessel will operate for about 11 months.

“The ALPV is an autonomous logistics delivery system that can lighten the Marines’ physical load, provide supplies at the critical point of need, and transfer of various classes of supplies across vast distances in the maritime environment,” Captain Puczko stated. “This is one potential technology the Marine Corps can use to provide sustainment to Stand-in Forces operating within contested areas.”
