Senate Majority Leader Advocates for AI Political Ad Regulation Bill

He also favors future AI legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promoted artificial intelligence (AI) regulation within political media during a recent interview, urging for the passage of three bills recently introduced to the Senate that address this issue.

“Look, deepfakes are a serious, serious threat to this democracy,” said Senator Schumer, referring to AI technology that creates extremely realistic video duplicates of real people. “If people can no longer believe that the person they’re hearing speak is actually the person, this democracy has suffered — it will suffer — in ways that we have never seen before.”

The interview was given in response to a deep-faked video circulated on X by the platform’s owner, Elon Musk. In the video, Vice President Kamala Harris appears to insult her own presidential campaign along with the former campaign of President Joe Biden.

If the three bills cleared by the Senate Rules Committee are passed by Congress, they would require AI disclosures on all political ads that use AI-generated content and would ban the use of AI to create deceptive footage of any federal political candidate.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Majority Leader Schumer as he promotes AI regulation and disclosure in political ads.
  • For members of the Senate as they consider the benefits and risks of the legislation.
