Judge Richard Stearns
Massachusetts U.S. District Court
Richard Gaylore Stearns was born in 1944 in Los Angeles, California. He earned an undergraduate degree from Stanford University, a Master of Letters from Balliol College, Oxford, University, and his Juris Doctor from Harvard University.
Stearns was a special assistant to presidential candidate George McGovern. He became a speech writer for the Massachusetts lieutenant governor, then worked in the Norfolk County district attorney’s office. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Massachusetts and became an associate justice on the state’s superior court.
Stearns was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve on the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He was confirmed by the Senate and received his commission in November 1993.

Judge Richard Stearns of the Massachusetts U.S. District Court rejected Harvard’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by six Jewish students claiming the university did not adequately address antisemitism on campus.
Judge Stearns wrote, “To conclude that the [Student Advisory Committee] has not plausibly alleged deliberate indifference would reward Harvard for virtuous public declarations that for the most part, according to the (complaint), proved hollow when it came to taking disciplinary measures against offending students and faculty.”
He added, “The facts as pled show that Harvard failed its Jewish students.”
