DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopians

Secretary Mayorkas announces 18-month extension amid ongoing conflict.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced an 18-month extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia—effective from June 13, 2024, to December 12, 2025. He cited the persistent armed conflict and humanitarian crisis conditions in Ethiopia, which prevent safe returns for individuals.

“Temporary Protected Status provides individuals already present in the United States with protection from removal when conditions in their home country prevent their safe return,” said Secretary Mayorkas. “That is the situation facing Ethiopians who arrived here on or before April 11 of this year. We are granting them protection through this temporary form of humanitarian relief that the law provides.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Mayorkas to be led by God as he heads the Department of Homeland Security.
  • For DHS and border officials to be discerning as they process refugees and asylum seekers.
