Silent Power

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.            Psalm 62:5

“Never underestimate the power of silence,“ wrote the author of the best-selling book In the Sphere of Silence in an article. Life is full of noise, both pleasant and disruptive, and escaping it is close to impossible. Even individuals in the television program Naked and Afraid who find themselves in desolate jungles or desert places are surrounded by noises. Scientists say that, even when you are sleeping, the neurons processing information in your brain are not doing so quietly. To the extent that you can, escaping noise and finding silence has been proven to benefit minds and bodies. David, the psalmist, asserts that silence is also beneficial to your soul.

Silence before the Lord is a discipline that gets easier with practice. “In quietness and in trust shall be your strength,” Isaiah 30:15 states. Can you think of times when you have slowed yourself down just to be quiet and still? Maybe you were sitting on a beach where the waves lapped against the shore, or in the woods where the breeze whistled through the pine needles. Your environment had noise, but you were still. These can be restorative times… where you experience peace, your blood pressure goes down, and the cares of the world disappear, even if only momentarily.

You can find that same silence in the presence of God. Read and meditate on His Word. Listen to soft inspirational music. Pray. Journal. Let His peace flow over and through you. Rejoice in just spending time with Him. Pray that Christians in America take the time to be silent before the Lord and be restored to the supernatural calm only He can deliver.
