The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous. – Matthew 13:49

Virginia became the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation on this day in 1777. By February 1779, 12 states had ratified the Articles, with only Maryland outstanding. Maryland was reluctant to ratify until it received assurances that the other states, particularly Virginia, would cede their western land claims to the Union. After two years of waiting for these assurances, Maryland ratified the Articles on February 2, 1781. Congress was officially informed of Maryland’s ratification on March 1, establishing the Articles of Confederation as the de facto framework of government for Congress. The journey toward unity is one of patience and compromise. Ephesians 4:3 encourages you to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility, gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Today, allow God to lead you into loving and compassionate unity and harmony in His family.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For members of Congress to be used by the Lord to accomplish His will in this country.
  • For the leaders of states as they endeavor to maintain a balance between the federal government and states’ jurisdiction.
