He Never Fails

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!       Psalm 46:10

Sometimes the Lord’s command to you is to watch and observe how He works without your help. That was the case when Sennacherib king of Assyria was positioned to invade Jerusalem. King Hezekiah of Judah had made weapons and shields and had built up the walls which had been broken down. When confronted with the Assyrian army, he prayed. The Lord sent an angel to strike down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians (2 Kings 18-19).

The deliverance was plainly miraculous and the neighboring nations saw God exalted among the people of Judah. Psalm 46 is a song of assurance: “God is our refuge and strength.” He is in the midst of His people, and though the nations rage and kingdoms totter, He is Immanuel, God with us. Nations may fight against God’s people, but the psalmist says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (verses 1, 6, 10).

Martin Luther’s hymn is an encouragement to you: “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing/Our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.” The enemies of God still work to overthrow His people, but His Spirit is within, and His truth will never fail. If you strive under your own strength, you will lose. However, as the hymn states, you can have the “right Man on your side… Christ Jesus it is He… From age to age the same, And He must win the battle.”

Though your earthly life and possessions are temporary, and you may be tempted to tremble over circumstances, God’s truth will stand. His kingdom is forever, and the battle is His. Trust Him. Pray that people in this nation witness Him exalted and put their faith in the One who will never fail.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
