Every word of God proves true. – Proverbs 30:5

General George Washington learned of a plot intended to discredit him and replace him with General Horatio Gates on this day in 1777. Known as the Conway Cabal, this conspiracy was led by Thomas Conway, a French-born officer who joined the Patriot cause through recruitment by American Delegate to France Silas Deane. Conway’s appointment as brigadier general followed his meeting with Washington in 1777. He was later implicated in a plot to remove Washington from his command after the Continental Army faced setbacks in 1777. Conway sent critical letters to influential figures. Upon discovering this, General Washington responded to Congress in January 1778, which led Conway to apologize in the form of his resignation in March 1778. He returned to France and died in exile in 1800 after being wounded in a duel with General John Cadwalader, defending Washington’s honor.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For Domestic Policy Council Director Neera Tanden as she provides recommendations to the president.
  • For the president and his advisors as they consider the information they receive and the sources from which it comes.
