Shake It Off

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.     Colossians 3:2

Have you ever felt like the tail was wagging the dog in your life? So often, it is not something huge but rather a host of little things nipping at your joy or undermining your hope. Though your faith may be challenged by repeated opposition, you can shake off both discouragement and the cares of this world. Think of a dog as it vigorously shakes off whatever clings to it!

When the apostle Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake on the island of Malta, after surviving a shipwreck, he just shook it off into the fire with no ill effects (Acts 28). You too can shake off the evils attempting to cling to you. Today, you have the privilege of knowing how the history of Earth plays out – Jesus Christ is triumphant! “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful” (Revelation 17:14). As you submit to the Lord and align your life with Christ, you discover how to overcome every challenge by His awesome power.

Ask God to show you where you are relying on your own problem-solving capacity rather than trusting Him. As those areas come to mind, confess them to the Lord and ask Him to help you focus on His provision rather than your grit and abilities. Pray that those in leadership positions in the United States would seek godly solutions to the issues facing the nation and that citizens support these ideas. Shake off hopelessness and keep your focus on Christ’s overcoming power!

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as the noonday.

7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!

8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
    Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 For the evildoers shall be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
