Secretary of State Announces Sanctions on Chinese Officials

Forced assimilation of Tibetan children is being called an education program by China.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced sanctions on certain Chinese officials this week. He expressed criticism over the treatment of the Tibetan Buddhist community, saying China’s education program amounted to “forcible assimilation of more than one million Tibetan children.”

Secretary Blinken said, “These coercive policies seek to eliminate Tibet’s distinct linguistic, cultural, and religious traditions among younger generations of Tibetans.”

“We urge PRC authorities to end the coercion of Tibetan children into government-run boarding schools and to cease repressive assimilation policies, both in Tibet and throughout other parts of the PRC,” Secretary Blinken said. “We will continue to work with our allies and partners to highlight these actions and promote accountability.”

Senator Todd Young of Indiana urged action toward China over Tibet months ago. “The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) aggression towards Tibet is self-serving, with negotiations and even the very definition of Tibet on the CCP’s terms. We must refresh U.S. policy towards Tibet, and push for negotiations that advance freedoms for the Tibetan people.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Young and his colleagues as they seek to protect the rights of Tibetan children.
  • For Secretaries Blinken and Yellen as they impose sanctions upon adversarial foreign individuals and entities.
