Friday, August 11

While both chambers of Congress are on August recess, legislative negotiations and legislative introductions are still happening.

The farm bill, which is renewed every five years, is receiving urgent attention since it comes due for approval by the end of September. Some members of the House Agriculture Committee have urged Speaker McCarthy not to trim funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP). Others have suggested that SNAP should stand on its own rather than be part of the farm bill.

Legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate that would increase the amount of pre-tax money that Americans can contribute to Health Savings Accounts.

A bill was introduced in the House by Representative Don Beyer of Virginia that would update the IRS code to impose an excise tax of 1000% on semi-automatic weapons and magazines.

Representatives Eric Schmitt of Missouri and Dan Bishop of North Carolina introduced the Censorship Accountability Act which would give citizens the right to sue specific federal employees for unlawful online censorship.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as he presides over his chamber.
  • For Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell as they head the Senate.
  • For members of the House and Senate to be discerning as they engage in negotiations regarding bills that have upcoming deadlines.
  • For the president and his administration as they provide input to the legislative process.
