July 4th – Tuesday

Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. – Psalm 127:1

On this day in 1776, representatives from the 13 American colonies formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, written primarily by Thomas Jefferson. This document signified the beginning of the separation of the colonies from Great Britain. War with Britain had already begun over a year before and would continue for another 5 years before the United States would officially become a free and independent nation. As you celebrate this national holiday, take time to pause and reflect on all the struggles God has seen the nation through. As you pray for those in positions of leadership and authority, ask the Lord to reveal any areas in your life where you are not depending on Him. Just as the Founders of the United States recognized the need for faith and trust in Almighty God, your freedom in Christ relies completely upon Him.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For the president and his advisors as they address threats to national security.
  • For the defense secretary and Joint Chiefs of staff as they advise the president as commander in chief.
