For I the Lord do not change. – Malachi 3:6

The Supreme Court issued its decision in the case of Loving v. Virginia on this date in 1967. This landmark civil rights case ruled all state laws that prohibited interracial marriage unconstitutional. Sixty-five years ago, Mildred Loving, a woman of color, and Richard Loving, who was white, were sentenced to a year in prison for marrying one another in the state of Virginia. The Supreme Court’s decision on the matter was unanimous, stating that such laws were in violation of the Equal Protection Clause because they were based exclusively on “distinctions drawn according to race.” This case was later used as the precedent for the case of Obergefell v. Hodges which legalized same-sex marriage in the United States. As you pray today, ask that God would lead the Supreme Court to make decisions according to His will in their upcoming rulings. Pray for His wisdom to shine the light of His love and truth to those around you.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For the Supreme Court justices as they consider the cases before them and issue rulings.
  • For Chief Justice John Roberts as he presides over the high court.
