Immutable

For I the Lord do not change.   Malachi 3:6

Immutability is one of the characteristics that describe God, along with His omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence. Immutable means that even over time, He is unchanging and unable to be changed. He is unchanging in His character, His will, and the covenant promises He has made. Stanford University’s Encyclopedia of Philosophy says, “God cannot undergo real or intrinsic change in any respect.”

Confident in God’s immutable love, Charles Haddon Spurgeon wrote, “He loves as much now as he did then; and when suns shall cease to shine, and moons to show their feeble light, he still shall love on forever and forever.” Spurgeon added, “You may change your plans, but he shall never, never change his.” That alone should make you sleep well each night.

God is and always has been in control. Nothing has happened, is happening, or will happen without it passing by His throne first. And nothing that has happened, is happening, or will happen can be for anything other than your benefit, once you are counted among His children.

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty” (2 Timothy 3:1).  Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Both are true and both are unchanging. When you are tempted to feel discouraged by the events of the day, “take heart.” The immutable, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent God who loves you is in control. Pray that many others will be comforted by His promises.

Today’s Verse: Malachi 3:6

For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
