Chief Justice Roberts Responds to Ethics Concerns

Maintaining the separation of powers is important as the court assesses conduct.

Chief Justice John Roberts spoke at the 100th-anniversary event for the American Law Institute, where he commented on ethics concerns regarding the justices of the Supreme Court.

“I want to assure people that I’m committed to making certain that we as a court adhere to the highest standards of conduct,” Chief Justice Roberts said. “We are continuing to look at things we can do to give practical effect to that commitment, and I am confident there are ways to do that that are consistent with our status as an independent branch of government and with the constitution’s separation of powers.”

The chief justice reemphasized the points the justices laid out in their “Statement on Ethics Principles and Practices” that was issued after the reports. That statement advocated for questions of Supreme Court ethics to remain the business of the Supreme Court and not Congressional legislation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chief Justice Roberts as he heads the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • For wisdom for the justices as they determine the ethical guidelines for the high court.
  • For discernment on the part of members of Congress regarding the separation of the powers of the three branches of U.S. government.
