Lord, Make Us One

I appeal to you brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.    1 Corinthians 1:10

In reading today’s verse about agreeing and having no division, you might think, “Well Paul has never had a church pick out carpet color!” Obviously, the verse does not mean all Christians have to think the same way. Even Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement over Mark as a ministry partner and went separate ways over the issue (Acts 15:36-41).

Paul’s point was that the church is grounded in the Lord Jesus. To the Philippians, Paul wrote, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (2:5-7). A church united in Christ, willing to submit to God’s Spirit and love their brothers and sisters as themselves, will be unified.

Jesus, in His prayer before His crucifixion, prayed for the unity of the church, “That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21). This is a good prayer to repeat. As you pray for the United States, pray for believers to be grounded in Christ alone and willing to give and take in the daily life of the church. Pray for unity and love to be so strong that unbelievers will be drawn to the name of Christ.

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 1:10

I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
