IRS Answers 2.4 Million More Phone Calls in 2023

An increase in funding results in 5,000 additional staff hired.

The Department of the Treasury released updated statistics this week about the performance of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) during the 2023 tax season. The IRS received a significant budget increase in 2022 through the Inflation Reduction Act after decades of budget cuts. The IRS hired 5,000 new employees for the 2023 tax season with part of that funding, which helped them answer 2.4 million more calls in comparison to the 2022 tax season.

The Inflation Reduction Act allocated $80 billion to the IRS for the next two years, which will help them to finally audit high-income citizens and businesses accurately. Using the rest of the funding, the IRS intends to hire an additional 20,000 staff members and update their computer systems in the next two years.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Commissioner Danny Werfel to seek God’s direction as he oversees the IRS.
  • For agency officials as they determine where and how to utilize the additional funding.
  • For IRS personnel as they answer taxpayers’ calls and process tax returns.
