U.S. Senator from Missouri

Eric Stephan Schmitt was born in June 1975 in Bridgeton, Missouri. He earned an undergraduate degree in political science from Truman State University and received his Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law. He was an adjunct faculty member at Saint Louis University before entering private practice.

Schmitt was an alderman for Glendale, Missouri, for three years before being elected to the Missouri Senate. He decided not to return to the Senate but ran instead for Treasurer of Missouri, a position he won and filled for two years. He was appointed to the office of Attorney General of Missouri and served four years there.

He was elected to be U.S. Senator from Missouri, assuming his position in January 2023.

Schmitt is married to Jamie, and they have three children. The family is Roman Catholic.

In the News…

Freshman Senator Eric Schmitt, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, degraded Pentagon leadership for defending their woke agenda that stresses issues like diversity and inclusion. He said they were driving off potential warfighters and politicizing the greatest military force in the world.

“The offspring of identity politics, which is incredibly divisive, has now made its way through DEI trainings in these branches,” Schmitt said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, referring to the Pentagon’s diversity, equity and inclusion agenda. “It is naive to believe that this is not divisive among recruits or people in the military.”

“We have heard from members of the military who have said that they resent being subjected to this,” he added. “This totem pole of grievances, this oppressor vs. oppressed.”

Senator Schmitt said he rejects the notion that somehow pursuing a social agenda leads to more lethality. He said the stream of extremism “stand-downs” and the Pentagon’s social policy dictates are causing division among service members and destroying the military’s capacity—not enhancing it.
