Ways and Directions

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?    Micah 6:8

Walking is a metaphor consistently used in the Bible to represent a way of life. Finding perspective on your walk can be complicated because you know what your conscious intentions are and take them into account. For example, how many people in handcuffs are heard to say, “I didn’t mean to do it!” It may surprise you how often you say or do something you previously thought was completely out of your character!

Many of God’s people end up where they did not intend to go by making the mistake of asking God to walk with them daily. While it sounds right, it is actually the opposite of what Christ set as an example. “Jesus told His disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me‘” (Matthew 16:24). In the Bible, people who walked with God actively followed Him. Noah, Moses, Abraham, and Paul, all went where God told them to go, not vice-versa. A more beneficial prayer to start your day might be, “God, as You lead today, strengthen me to follow.“

Following God requires a humble agreement to release your own desire and direction in favor of His. This submission pleases Him. “He teaches the humble His way” (Psalm 25:9). Ask the Lord to help you examine your walk today and whether it is based on following Him or asking Him to go your way.

Pray for decision-makers across America to humble their hearts in a desire to lead the nation in God’s way. Ask that America will stand out as a nation of people following God.

Today’s Verse: Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good;
    and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
    and to walk humbly with your God?

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

6 Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

8 Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9 He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
