The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.   John 14:26

How is your memory? Not for your grocery or to-do list but of God’s good work in your life?  Remembering is an important spiritual practice and, when you begin to exercise it, the Holy Spirit steps in and enlivens the effort to bring blessing to you and glory to God.

The Bible is a story of remembering, like when God remembered Noah or His covenants with Abraham and David. In the New Testament, Jesus set a table and instructed His followers to eat and drink in remembrance of His sacrifice and love.

The author of Psalm 77 describes the spiritual act of remembrance beautifully, maybe you can identify with this thought process: “I am so troubled that I cannot speak … will the Lord never again be favorable? … Has God forgotten to be gracious? … I will remember the deeds of the Lord, yes, I will ponder all your work … your way O God is holy. What god is great like our God. You are the God who works wonders, you have made known you might among the peoples. You with your arm redeemed your people” (Psalm 77:4-15).

The psalmist goes from despair to hope without having put down his pen. The act of remembering eliminates fear and fuels faith in his spirit. Take a moment right now and remember what God has done for you in the past. Say it out loud and write it down!

Pray for America’s leaders to remember God’s faithfulness and provision to the nation. Ask that voters will also use their memory to elect people who have shown faithfulness to God’s principles in the past.

4 who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
