Speaker to Lead Delegation to Southern Border

House members will go to Cochise County, Arizona.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California and four freshmen members of Congress are scheduled to take an aerial tour of the U.S.-Mexico border from Cochise County, Arizona, on Thursday. They will be accompanied by agents from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Reports from CBP say monthly border encounters rose from 100,000 in February 2021 to over 250,000 in December 2022. They recorded more than 230,000 border encounters for the first time last October, and the numbers have increased each month. The numbers do not include the “getaways.”

The Cochise County Sheriff reported they are bracing themselves for increased migrations. He also recalled the number of deaths of migrants who have come across the border illegally and died in the arid landscape of Arizona. He said the cost to Cochise County taxpayers for border-related crimes is $4.3 million.

The mayor of Douglas, Arizona, said, “I wish the federal government would seriously take a nonpartisan look at it. It’s becoming a humanitarian nightmare.”

The House has opened investigations into the issues at the border, the handling of the influx of migrants, and national security concerns.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker McCarthy and the other representatives as they visit the Cochise County border.
  • For wisdom for elected officials at the various levels of government as they seek to address the burgeoning humanitarian crisis.
  • For the leaders and citizens of communities dealing with the care of the growing number of migrants.
