“Getaways” Evaded Border Patrol in Record Numbers in 2022

Nearly 300,000 were tallied in the first four months of the new fiscal year

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported last month that in fiscal year 2022, which ended September 30, there were nearly 600,000 so-called “getaways” who crossed the southern border.  In just the first four months of the current fiscal year, 293,993 known illegal immigrants have evaded agents.  That amounts to 2,450 per day across those 120 days. “Getaways” are those who run from Border Patrol agents but are reported with other forms of surveillance. It is unclear how many more have escaped recording.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has maintained that the border is secure and has testified to as much before Congress.

The FBI does not agree with Homeland Security’s assessment. Before the adjournment of the last Congress, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified, “I can only speak to border security from our narrow lane. What I would say is that we see significant criminal threats coming from south of the border—whether it’s guns, drugs, money, violence. We see transnational criminal organizations that are sending their drugs here and that are using street gangs here to distribute it. And that contributes to the violent crime crisis here.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Mayorkas as Congress investigates the handling of matters at the border.
  • For Border Patrol agents and officers as they seek to prevent illegal entry into the interior.
  • For FBI Director Wray to seek God’s guidance as he heads the bureau.
