January 31st – Tuesday

I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify Him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. – Psalm 69:30-31

President Harry Truman gave his support to the development of the hydrogen bomb on this day in 1950. The weapon was estimated to be more powerful than the atomic bombs that had been used in World War II, by a hundred times. Prior to this, the U.S. had fallen behind in the development of nuclear weapons when the Soviet Union successfully tested an atomic bomb and one of the top-ranking scientists in the U.S. nuclear program was discovered to be a spy for the Soviet Union. The president approved massive funding to complete the first hydrogen bomb to once again take the lead in the superpower race. As commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces, the president has great power over weapons capable of great destruction. Pray over the president today for the wisdom to know how to best steward these tools.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For discernment for the president and his foreign policy advisors as hostile nations take aggressive action around the world.
  • That Defense Secretary Austin would seek the Lord’s guidance as he heads the United States military.
