House Bill Would Criminalize Some Hate Speech

Sponsor says the legislation would deter white supremacy.

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas introduced the Leading Against White Supremacy Act of 2023, which would monitor Americans’ speech online and assign criminal punishment for certain forms of hate speech.

Under the act, a “person engages in a white supremacy-inspired hate crime when white supremacy ideology has motivated the planning, development, preparation, or perpetration of actions that constituted a crime or were undertaken in furtherance of activity that, if effectuated, would have constituted a crime.”

The bill currently has no cosponsors and seems unlikely to pass in the House.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Congresswoman Lee as she endeavors to address to hate speech.
  • For members of the House of Representatives as they consider and vote on bills.
  • For wisdom for Speaker McCarthy as he oversees House proceedings and priorities.
