The Well is Deep

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways.  – Romans 11:33

The apostle Paul wrote to the Roman Christians about the mystery of salvation revealed through Jesus. His review of history recalls Israel as God’s chosen people, called to be faithfully obedient. Though they rebelled often, they remained the vehicle through which blessing would come to the whole world.

As Paul explained, if Israel had not rejected Jesus, the Gentiles would have had no opportunity to hear the salvation message. God was working on a worldwide scale. As Bible commentator D. Stuart Briscoe notes, “The tragedy of Israel’s unbelief is therefore used by God to bring about the victory of Gentile evangelization, which, in turn, will bring about Jewish restoration.”

That is why Paul is so jubilant as he finishes this portion of his letter to the believers. The mystery of salvation has been revealed, but Paul is overwhelmed by God’s wisdom and knowledge, grace and mercy, holiness and justice working together as He directs all His people to their glorious end.

As you think about how God has worked in your life – His direction in the past, His care for you in the present, and His continual guidance for the future – may your heart be filled with joy and thanksgiving for all the Lord has done for you. Continue to study God’s Word so you can learn more of His truth, but know that the well of understanding is deep. God will show you what you need to know in your time of need.

Pray now for those in government who do not know God as well as for those who are faithful to Him. May the Lord allow them to work together for His glory.

28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. 32 For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
