Education Secretary Responds to Low Student Test Scores

No notable improvement was shown in any state.

The Department of Education released the “Nation’s Report Card” on Monday which shows that test scores have experienced the largest declines in math ever recorded for fourth- and eighth-grade students. The National Assessment of Educational Progress showed math scores declining for those grades in nearly every state and district between 2019 and 2022. The department reported that reading scores also fell in most states during the COVID years.

COVID and the resulting school closures affected all states and regions. The pandemic shutdown resulted in learning setbacks for the majority of America’s children, eliminating decades of academic progress and widening racial disparities.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona stated, “This is a moment of truth for education. How we respond to this will determine not only our recovery, but our nation’s standing in the world.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Cardona to seek God’s direction as he responds to the state of America’s education.
  • For officials in the Education Department as they evaluate and address the low scores in math and reading.
  • For wisdom for educators and parents as they oversee children’s education.
