Answer: C – While previous attempts had been made to pass civil rights reform, President John F. Kennedy proposed the Civil Rights Act of 1963 and submitted it to Congress in June of 1963. Following the assassination of President Kennedy five months later, and in the midst of growing civil unrest, President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed for the passage of the bill. After much debate in Congress, President Johnson signed the bill into law on July 2nd, 1964, just one year and one month after President Kennedy introduced it.
