January 6 Committee Subpoenas Former President Trump

Chairman says it is “a question of accountability.”

The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol voted unanimously Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump. Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi said, “This is a question about accountability to the American people,“ and added that he must answer for trying to remain in the executive office.

“We are obligated to seek answers directly from the man who set this all in motion,” said Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming. “Every American is entitled to those answers, so we can act now to protect our republic.”

There has not yet been a response from the former president who could fight the subpoena, but that would likely set off a legal fight with just over two months left for the current Congress.

There was an effort by Congress in the 1840s to subpoena former Presidents John Tyler and John Quincy Adams over clandestine intelligence issues. They never provided information.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the members of the House Select Committee as they continue their investigation of the events of January 6.
  • For former President Trump and his legal team as they respond to the subpoena.
