Know This To Be True

We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true, and we are in him who is true.   – 1 John 5:20

From the first sentence of this epistle, the apostle John testifies to the truths about Jesus. He says, “we have seen with our own eyes… we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life” (1 John 1:1). He so wants his readers to know that what he has proclaimed is true and keep them from being drawn away by false teachers or the world around them that has rejected Jesus.

As John closes this particular letter, he is just as assertive in his declarations: “We know” are the words beginning verses 18, 19, and 20. There is no doubt or hesitation in John’s convictions: children of God are not without sin, but they understand the danger of it and will seek to not be a part of it (v. 18). Secondly, the believer knows the power of evil, but understands that God is his Guardian (v. 19). And lastly, today’s verse, gives more insight into the truth in Christ.

It is a fact that the Son of God came into this world and through Him you can know the Father. Your understanding of God is clearer – He is the God of Light and Love (1 John 1:5; 4:8). You can be confident and know this to be true.

The world may guess about and hope for certain things to transpire, especially at death, but believers know and can testify to what is true; they will have eternal life with God in Heaven. Pray for the people of this nation, including governing officials, that they may come to know the truth about the Savior and enjoy the benefits of the knowledge of Him in their lives.

Today’s Verse: 1 John 5:20

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
    and I will keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
    and observe it with my whole heart.
35 Lead me in the path of your commandments,
    for I delight in it.
36 Incline my heart to your testimonies,
    and not to selfish gain!
37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
    and give me life in your ways.
38 Confirm to your servant your promise,
    that you may be feared.
39 Turn away the reproach that I dread,
    for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I long for your precepts;
    in your righteousness give me life!
