A Question

Sell your possessions and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fall, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.  – Luke 12:33

If you could ask Jesus a question, what would it be? The Bible records an interesting exchange between Jesus and a young man on a quest for Heaven. He was successful in worldly pursuits, achieving a good life, wealth and security, hoping to earn an eternal life of the same quality.

Complimentary and humble, he approached Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17). Jesus replied with an immediate refocus of the conversation, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). What a shock it must have been for the young man to learn that being “good enough” was a title belonging to God alone. He faced a roadblock, every spiritual seeker encounters; best efforts will never be enough! All must look to God’s mercy to receive the gift of eternal life.

Jesus loved the young man and did not let him leave with an unanswered question, “You lack one thing; go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me” (Mark 10:21). The young man walked away in sadness.

As you pray today, as the Lord to reveal anything that is hindering your spiritual walk with Him. While God is not likely to tell you to sell all your possessions, He WILL remind you there is nothing you can value more than Him if you want to be His disciple.

Intercede for public officials whose hearts are devoted to knowing Jesus at any cost. Pray for faithful men and women who will serve in government and make Christ their greatest treasure.

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
