Justice Alito Gives Religious Liberty Speech

He says the “turn away from religion” has contributed to issues pertaining to religious freedom.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito spoke at the Notre Dame Religious Liberty Summit in Rome last month. The Notre Dame Law School’s Religious Liberty Initiative highlights the global importance of freedom of religion.

“Religious liberty is under attack in many places because it is dangerous to those who want to hold complete power,” Justice Alito said during the keynote. “It also probably grows out of something dark and deep in the human DNA, a tendency to distrust and dislike people who are not like ourselves.”

The justice went on to discuss the “turn away from religion” that has increased issues regarding religious liberty.

“Polls show a significant increase in the percentage of the population that rejects religion or thinks it’s just not all that important,” Justice Alito said. “And this has a very important impact on religious liberty because it is hard to convince people that religious liberty is worth defending if they don’t think that religion is a good thing that deserves protection.”

The justice continued, “The challenge for those who want to protect religious liberty in the United States, Europe, and other similar places is to convince people who are not religious that religious liberty is worth special protection,” he said. “And that will not be easy to do.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Justice Alito as he advocates for freedom of religion around the world, not just in the U.S.
  • For the Supreme Court justices as they determine the cases they will hear in the fall term.
  • For protection for the justices who have still faced harassment and demonstrators.
