UK Prime Minister Johnson Resigns

President Biden says the U.S. relationship with the UK remains strong.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned from his office Thursday after days of resignations from his government left him unable to govern. Up until Wednesday, the prime minister was steadfast about remaining as in his role. He finally agreed to step down after a close ally told him to do so for the good of the nation. He will remain as prime minister until a successor is in place.

President Biden stated, “The United Kingdom and the United States are the closest of friends and Allies, and the special relationship between our people remains strong and enduring.” He added, “I look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the government of the United Kingdom, as well as our Allies and partners around the world, on a range of important priorities. That includes maintaining a strong and united approach to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Putin’s brutal war on their democracy, and holding Russia accountable for its actions.”

John Kirby, the National Security Council strategic communications coordinator, also indicated the resignation will not affect international support for Ukraine. He said, “Every leader at NATO and every leader at the G-7 said they were going to continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes. I think President Zelensky understands that he has that international support, regardless of what government is in power in any one of those countries.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the president and his administration as they interact with the UK during this shift in their government.
  • For citizens and residents of the United Kingdom as their parliament undergoes this transition.
  • For God to fulfill His purposes through the prime minister’s resignation and replacement.
