God-Confidence

For the Lord will be your confidence.  – Proverbs 3:26

Self-confidence is a trait humans admire, but Proverbs 3 teaches trusting in the Lord for safety, provision, and direction, not self. Jesus said you must come to the Lord as a humble child goes to a parent. “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). As you come to Him as His child, you live under His principles and commands that are far above the ways of the world.

When you run to Him as your refuge, you dwell under His protection. “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you” (Psalm 5:11). Jesus said to not worry but pray and trust God to answer, “For your Father knows what you need before you ask him” (Matthew 6:8). Trusting in the Lord does not mean you abandon your plans, do nothing, and passively wait for God to act. James the apostle said to ask for wisdom then act on the wisdom God gives you. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5).

Trusting in God replaces self-confidence, which circumstances can undermine, with a confidence in Him that cannot be shaken. When your trust is fully in the Lord, you can go forth in confidence, in His wisdom, protection, and guidance. As you pray for the United States today, pray that its governing officials and citizens will turn to God for solutions to all of the problems that face the nation.

Today’s Verse: Proverbs 3:26

My son, do not forget my teaching,
    but let your heart keep my commandments,
for length of days and years of life
    and peace they will add to you.

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
    bind them around your neck;
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good success
    in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
    and refreshment to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your wealth
    and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
10 then your barns will be filled with plenty,
    and your vats will be bursting with wine.

11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline
    or be weary of his reproof,
12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
    as a father the son in whom he delights.
