On High and Here

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!  – Psalm 57:5

“Heaven is high and the emperor is far away” is an ancient proverb found in many cultures. Over the generations, dark and evil acts have been committed under the cover of “no one will know.” On a personal level, a great test of your character is what you do when no one is looking!

God’s children know where He is, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? I ascent to heaven, you are there, If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me” (Psalm 139:7-12). On the personal level, there is nothing God does not know about you, “O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar… you are acquainted with all my ways“ (Psalm 139:1-3).

Heaven may be high but God is NOT far away! He is HERE and well acquainted with the affairs of humanity, working out His plan to redeem the world and His people. When you see disturbing things happening around the world, let it remind you His work on Earth is not yet finished. He is still allowing people an opportunity to come to Him in faith before the day all things will be judged. Praise Him for His patience with the unbelieving, and ask that many will stop and seek His hand of hope and salvation while the opportunity exists.

9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
