In the Name of the Law

His delight is in the law of the Lord.  – Psalm 1:2

“Hands up in the name of the law” – a great old line from the black and white movie era but also a good representation of how some people view an encounter with the law enforcement; as a sign you are in trouble! Unfortunately, many bring that negative view into their spiritual relationship with God’s law. It is true that, in corrupt hands, God’s law has been used to dominate people in terrible ways, but that is more telling of the sinfulness of humanity rather than the purpose of His law.

Not surprisingly, because of sin, the Creator of humankind knew you would not naturally find your way to Him, so He made a map for you – a detailed atlas showing the road from His heart to yours. There are two routes on that map, one leads to deep relationship and the other to estrangement. God’s law is a rendering of His likeness! Seekers on the relationship road discover His law to be a step-by-step guide to the good life of communion with the most loving and interesting Being they will ever know.

Today, put your hands up – in praise.  Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the law so you are not under its authority! You are free to delight in a lifetime of discovery of God’s love, learning through His statutes how to reflect God’s nature through things like justice and mercy, forgiveness and grace. Pray for America’s judges, from local to federal courts, to carefully consider their own spiritual journey and to decide the cases before them in a manner that reflects God’s laws, bringing blessing to the nation.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 1:2

but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
