An Adoring Heart

 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.  – Psalm 95:6

Today, it is helpful to begin the devotion by looking at the verse that follows the one above. It says: “For He is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand” (Psalm 95:7). The wording of this is important. Usually, sheep are in the pasture, but the psalmist is here reminding the people that they are like sheep – weak creatures, defenseless and foolish, but ones who are cared for by the Shepherd who leads them, provides for them, protects them, and rescues them from danger.

For those reasons alone, the believer should not hesitate to worship the Lord – but there is more. He is your Maker; you are precious in His sight. He is the Father who loves you, who has redeemed you, and who preserves you to the end. How can you not give Him praise and thanksgiving?! He deserves to be worshiped. Bowing down shows you to be humble and reverent. Posture is not everything, and yet it can be evidence of an adoring heart for the One who is faithful to you.

Think of the little boy who refused to sit down, but was finally forced to do so, and then declared, “I may be sitting on the outside, but I’m standing up on the inside.” Let go of the rebellious human nature and let your outside reflect your inside. Cultivate a heart that is soft toward God, understanding the blessings that He bestows upon you, and overflowing with joyful praise and adoration. Then intercede for the softening of the hearts of those in authority, so they will bow before the Lord. Pray that God’s saving grace would permeate their lives.

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
    let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God,
    and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
    let us  kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
