The Innovator’s Song

Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!  – Psalm 100:2

What kind of melody lives in your heart? Some no-nonsense folks resist any music residing there, while others report a strong and life-changing melody. The intersection of passion and practicality is a place where the truly innovative live.  Regardless of their beliefs or values, “heart singers” like Steve Jobs, David Bowie, Ernest Shackleton, Alan Turing, Nelson Mandela, and Muhammed Ali have brought dramatic change to the world. What visionary people have in common is not ambition but the song in their heart that guides them.

Sadly, many follow the rhythm of human desire leading only to a self-absorbed and hollow worldly success. But there is another option. It comes when people humble themselves before the Spirit of God, allowing Him to arrange their tune. “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord“ (Psalm 40:3).

The new score in the heart of every believer is the sound of worship. The lyrics are only known to those walking in freedom and the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Gratitude is the song’s refrain, “The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults and with my song I give thanks to him“ (Psalm 28:7).

Pray for innovators in American culture to consider carefully where their decisions will take the nation. Ask that political power players in America will lay aside ambition and fortune to embrace a “heart song” honoring God and His precepts.

6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”
